Lsu vs Alabama 2024: scores, stats, and more

Alabama’s chances of qualifying for the College Football Playoffs seem rather bright following a 42-13 triumph over No. 15 LSU on Saturday night.

Jalen Milroe rushed for four touchdowns as the LSU defense battled a running quarterback for the second straight game. Starting the game with a 39-yard TD, Milroe pushed the game wide open in the fourth quarter with a 72-yard run.

Texas A&M’s second-half quarterback swap totally caught the LSU defense two weeks ago off-target. Conner Weigman was replaced by Marcel Reed as the Aggies scored TD drives on his first four possessions. With the Aggies running for 242 yards, Reed scored three of them personally on quarterback rushes.

Alabama obviously intended to once more challenge the LSU defense. A significant component of the Alabama system is Milroe’s ability to create magic with his speed and escapability; LSU struggled to stop the intended QB runs.

With just 12 runs, Milroe ended the game with 185 rushing yards. The Crimson Tide’s strong lead let him see the last minutes from the bench.

LSU’s third of the season, the defeat definitely takes the Tigers out of postseason consideration. LSU started the season lost to USC, a loss that seems worse with every Trojans loss. Still, they have a strong chance to win out. Still, a 9-3 season is most likely insufficient to qualify for the enlarged postseason anyway.

The LSU defense failed to stop the run, so the offense was not explosive either. With two interceptions, QB Garrett Nussmeier battled on a wet evening in Baton Rouge. Alabama leading 21-6, Nussmeier’s first choice came on the first drive of the second half.

The Tigers traveled all the way to Alabama’s 4-yard line, but Deontae Lawson intercepted Nussmeier’s ball on second down at the goal line. The trip inside the Alabama 10-yard line for the Tigers was the second one they missed a touchdown on. LSU got to the Alabama 6 and had to kick a field goal in the first half.

Though the conference is in logjam at the top, the Crimson Tide are still alive for the SEC championship game. And Milroe boasts data that line up nicely. He threw 13 passing touchdowns and has 16 rushing ones. Only Ward and Chandler Morris of North Texas are accountable for more than thirty touchdowns this season.

Is Milroe once more in the Heisman discussion?

Through the first 11 weeks of the season in Colorado’s Travis Hunter, Oregon’s Dillon Gabriel, Miami’s Cam Ward, and Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty, there are four obvious favorites for the Heisman. But Milroe has brought himself back into the discussion with his Saturday night performance and Alabama’s SEC winning prospects.

Milroe is not likely to be lifting the Heisman Trophy at the conclusion of the season. Not write him off as a Heisman finalist, though.
